Helping LGBT Elders Navigate Health Benefits • Workshop Nov. 9th Untangling the complex and sometimes intimidating world of health benefits can be difficult for many LGBT elders. What kind of coverage do you need for your lifestyle? What documents and paperwork will you need to show? Where should you even start? Fortunately, these questions and many more will be answered at an upcoming Lunch & Learn event hosted by The LGBT Health Resource Center and presented by Sara Abrams and Mike Willis of Chase Brexton Health Care’s Case Management department. The Lunch & Learn workshop will take place on Thursday, […]

How Do Women Urinate?

Inquiring minds want to know! Dear Dr. Eva, Please don’t laugh at me, this is a serious question. I’m a straight woman. I was in a women’s internet chat room where we were discussing whether women have “one hole or two” – that is, does urine drain through the vagina, or from a separate opening? Some people thought urine comes out through the vagina; others said women have a separate hole to drain urine. I always thought that in women urine drains through the vagina, the same way that sperm and urine come out through the same opening in men. […]

Comfort Zone? Ditch It!

If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever. – Thomas Aquinas Think of times in your life when all was well – job, school, and love life, proceeding smoothly… For some, those are times when an almost-itch starts to develop. Seeking change, looking for some excitement. For others, a need to preserve this state, to savor the comfort and to stay in a homeostatic balance. There is no right or wrong in these approaches to life: We all have learned behaviors, personality styles, character, and preferred modes of behavior. […]

Are Weight-Loss Mints for Real?

Beware diet hucksterism! Dear Dr. Eva, I get emails all the time for “amazing” weight loss cures. Somehow the Internet knows I’m overweight. I have tried some of these “cures” with no real success. I wanted to see if you would check this ad out as a doctor and let OUTloud readers know the truth, if it works or if it is BS like I think? Size 3x

Spirit Day–Support for LGBT Youth & Against Bullying October 19th

Despite the progress made nationwide in recent years, LGBTQ youth face harassment and bullying at rates far in excess of others their age. Those incidents can lead to feelings of physical insecurity, hopelessness, and even self-harm. To provide a public show of support for these youth and their allies, October 19th has been designated as Spirit Day, a chance for all Americans to “Go Purple” and let younger LGBTQ individuals know they are not alone. We asked Kate Bishop, Education Coordinator at The LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care, to tell us a little more about Spirit […]

Domestic Safety

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Many people think of domestic violence as physical brutality but it is much more than that. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence defines domestic violence as “the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, threats, and emotional abuse.”

Surgery and Sexuality

Nerves grow back, but slowly I am a 70-year-old woman. Obviously I’ve been in menopause for a long time. Because of an enlarging tumor in my uterus, I will soon be having a hysterectomy. When I asked the surgeon how the hysterectomy will affect my ability to have orgasms, he looked so embarrassed he almost blushed. I suppose it didn’t help that he looked younger than my own children. He seemed to think that old people have no sexuality. I didn’t get an answer to my question. Some of my friends who have had a hysterectomy say that they felt […]
