Fifth Annual Frederick Pride Welcomes Over 5,000 People
Over 5,000 people attended the fifth annual Frederick Pride on Saturday, June 25th, presented by the Frederick Center. Over 70 vendors – including non-profits, churches, small businesses, artists, and Frederick County agencies – set up along Carroll Creek Linear Park. In other parts of Frederick, business owners posted “Frederick Pride Ally” decals in their shop windows, indicating a safe space and a special discount for Pride attendees. From the ecumenical church service before the festival began, to the after-party at The Lodge in Boonsboro, Maryland, Frederick Pride went strong all day long.
Baltimore Pride Is Not In Jeopardy
GLCCB Statement on Baltimore Prideand Debts Owed to the City This past Monday, we were shocked and a bit saddened to read this highly sensationalized headline via the Washington Blade: “Baltimore Pride in jeopardy due to lack of funds.” What was intended as a community crowd-funding effort to help our organization with debts incurred from last year’s administration was irresponsibly misconstrued as immediate danger to an event that has been running for over 40 years: Maryland’s largest LGBTQ event, Baltimore Pride. A large, capable, new team of GLCCB volunteers, board members, and staff have worked countless hours over the past […]
2016 Pride Committee Busy at Work
The 2016 Baltimore Pride Planning Committee had its first meeting in November 2015, and has since grown to a dedicated team of over 30 community members. As expressed at a previous town hall event, many community members were unhappy with how GLCCB procured and managed Pride volunteers, and felt that Pride committee meetings were poorly organized and provided little opportunity for true involvement. In response, we completely restructured our Pride committee and it has proven to be extremely successful. We can all look forward to one of the best Pride celebrations ever.
Pride Weekend is Not an Entitlement Program
Pride weekend I overheard snippets such as: “The Pride parade wasn’t big enough or long enough.” “The Block Party was not very good and I didn’t want to stay.” “The Festival last year was bigger and it cost too much to park today.” “Why wasn’t there a map showing where everything is and a program about when it is?”
Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church Celebrates Pride 2015
Two pastors and 16 members of Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church joined marchers from many other congregations in the Baltimore Pride parade on Saturday, July 25. The church is an inclusive, inspiring, urban Christian community committed to following Jesus and exploring and living out the Christian faith in Baltimore and beyond with an emphasis on worship, justice, service to others, and preaching relevant to the questions of modern life.
The New Normal
A year ago while giving my keynote at Frederick Pride I posed a question to the listening crowd. “How many of you know a trans person?” Only a few hands shot up. I asked, “Well who am I then?” Suddenly all of their hands went up. They realized that they now knew at least one trans person – me. And so with Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out and reveal we now have millions of people in our county and around the world able to raise their hand in response to that question. That is a very good thing.
Proud vs Pride
As some of you may know I have been selected by Baltimore Pride as the “Activist of the Year” for 2014. I want to thank the hundreds, yes that many, who have contacted me providing well wishes and positive affirmations of this recognition. As always no one person accomplishes much in this world without the help of others and I am no exception. A heartfelt thank you to so many that I could not name them here for fear of omitting any one of you. As a relative outsider to the LGBTQ movement prior to my own transition I can […]
