As the seasons change I want to keep you informed of some of the venue changes for upcoming leather events. There are also a few new gatherings on the calendar that you will want to check out. In the leather community there is always something going on. Events scheduled at the temporarily closed Baltimore Eagle have been forced to select another location.
Next up is the Atlantic States Leather Weekend scheduled for September 28th and 29th which has been relocated to Grand Central. This regional leather gathering which includes the third annual Atlantic State LeatherSIR / boy / and Community Bootblack Contest starts on Friday, September 28th with the meet and greet event and continues Saturday, September 29th with the contest at 5:30 pm followed by the victory party for the 2019 Atlantic States Leather titleholders.
You will also want to raise a glass and toast the 2018 Atlantic States leather family who represented our area well in Dallas, Texas over the recent Labor Day Weekend. Atlantic States LeatherSIR “Frat Daddy” George was selected runner-up for International Leather SIR 2018, Atlantic States Leatherboy 2018 Justin Charles was selected runner-up to International Leatherboy 2018, and Atlantic States Community Bootblack 2018 girl Cait was awarded the Golden Brush Award. Taking home the titles were Great Lakes LeatherSIR 2018 who was selected International LeatherSIR 2018, Southwest Leatherboy 2018 boy Collin who was sashed International Leatherboy 2018, and taking the title of International Community Bootblack 2018 was Great Lakes Bootblack 2018 Raymond Smith.
The International Mr. Leather Bear Contest has been relocated to the Lord Baltimore Hotel. This weekend will start on Friday, October 5th with a meet and greet party at Leon’s. On Saturday the hotel will be the place for the leather vendor mart from 1 to 10 pm, a cocktail reception in the hotel’s Sky Bar from 2 to 4 pm, the contest starting a 7 pm in a hotel ballroom, and a dance party. The COMMAND, MC leather club will be celebrating 30 years in November and have also selected the Lord Baltimore Hotel as one of their venues. Their annual leather weekend begins on Friday, November 2nd with a cocktail party at the hotel from 7 to 8:30 pm followed by a bar crawl to Leon’s (8:30 to 10 pm) and a meet and greet with the announcement of the Mr. Maryland Leather 2019 Contestants at Grand Central starting at 11 pm. The contest will take place at 3 pm on Saturday, November 3rd at The Windup Space (12 West North Avenue) followed by the 30th anniversary dinner back at the Lord Baltimore Hotel at 9 pm. Also coming of soon: COMMAND, MC presents a Leather Night and Bear Happy Hour on Friday, September 14th starting at 6 pm at the Rock & Roll Hotel in Washington, DC and a ShipMates’ bar night will be held on Saturday, September 15th starting at 9 pm at the DC Eagle. Saturday, September 22nd brings the tenth annual Philadelphia Leather Pride Night at the Voyeur Nightclub in Philadelphia. The 19th annual New Jersey Leather Weekend will be held on October 19th to 21st at the Club Paradise located inside the Empress Hotel in Asbury Park, New Jersey. This event includes the Mr. and Ms. New Jersey Leather 2019 Contest and so much more. Details can be found at LeatherNJonline.com.
The weekend of November 16th – 18th is the tenth annual Mr. Virginia Bear 2019 Contest in Norfolk, Virginia. Contestants will compete for three titles: Mr. Virginia Bear, Cub, and Hunter. If only there was a place to meet people from all the area leather and bear clubs. There is! On Friday, November 16th at the DC Eagle there will be an “All Clubs Night.”
The evening will not only include area leather clubs and bear clubs, but also uniform clubs, LGBT sports clubs, and more.
These are just a few of the events coming soon. Wow! That’s a lot going on.
- Rodney is originally from Hagerstown, Maryland and for many years has lived in Baltimore. In April 2017, Rodney was sworn in for his 10th year as the President of the ShipMates Club of Baltimore. He has been involved in the leather community for many years, but often denies that he sold Jell-O shots at The Last Supper. He has been writing THE LEATHER LINE for the BALTIMORE OUTLOUD newspaper (Baltimoreoutloud.com.) for over fourteen years. He has produced the Mr. & Ms. Baltimore Eagle Contest and the Maryland LeatherSIR/Leatherboy Contest. In 2001 he was proud to serve as Maryland Mr. Drummer 2001. Rodney also does stand-up comedy and in 2013 was thrilled to perform at Philadelphia Leather Pride Night. He has been nominated multiple times for a Pantheon of Leather Award, was selected Leather Man of the Year in 2013 by COMMAND M.C. and by the Baltimore Leather Association of the Deaf in 2006. The 11th annual 12 Days of Christmas benefit show was dedicated to Rodney and his partner Sir Steve. He has been twice selected as ShipMate of the Year. He has judged Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2015, Atlantic States LeatherSIR / Leatherboy and recently judged Mr. Eagle NYC 2018.
