LGBT elders shouldn’t let Valentine’s Day pass them by—there are plenty of exciting ways to spice up their love life and keep the passion in their relationships.
Everything LGBT elders need to know will be uncovered at an upcoming LGBTQ Community Connection online seminar on Thursday, Feb. 10 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The session will be presented by Jacq Jones, owner of Sugar on The Avenue in Hampden. For more information on how to join, visit www.chasebrexton.org/LGBTQCommunityFeb22.
We asked Jacq for a few teases of the intimate advice she’ll share with attendees.
What are a few health benefits from maintaining an active sex life after 50?
Sex is good for you. Regular orgasms help boost the immune system, reduce pain and elevate your mood—everyone benefits from that! As we age, anything we can do to help maintain good blood flow and muscle strength is important. Sexual activity helps with both!
What is the most common question you hear from 50+ individuals?
I think that the most common question is how to deal with bodies that are changing. One of the beautiful parts of continuing to live is that things change. Sometimes, those changes can feel scary, especially if they are unexpected. The most common changes we see are less reliable erections, a decrease in sensation or the intensity of orgasms and/or a decrease in lubrication (for folks who have vaginas). There are ways to accommodate all of those—we just need to use sex toys, lube and creativity!
What’s the best way for someone to discuss their desires with their significant other?
Openness, honesty and active listening. Telling a partner what you want or need can feel scary. But it’s super likely your partner wants to please you in bed. Give them the gift of the information they need to do that. They can’t read your mind.
What advice do you have for someone over 50 who wants to spice things up this Valentine’s Day?
One of my favorite tips is to pick up a book of erotica, highlight your favorite things and pass the book to your partner. If you’re currently single, make a date with yourself. Take yourself to your favorite places, buy a present and then set up a super hot time for masturbation. You are the lover that will be with you the rest of your life.
