An Interview with Mayor David Gysberts

David Gysberts is a high-school guidance counselor. He’s gay. He loves the outdoors. He lives in a beautiful historic house. And he’s the mayor of Hagerstown, Maryland. “My identity, like everybody else’s, has many layers. I think of myself first as a child of God or the universe; a member of my family; a citizen of my country, my state, my county, my city; my profession; things that I do for hobbies – so being gay is not the most salient part of my identity,” he explained.

Fifth Annual Frederick Pride Welcomes Over 5,000 People

Over 5,000 people attended the fifth annual Frederick Pride on Saturday, June 25th, presented by the Frederick Center. Over 70 vendors – including non-profits, churches, small businesses, artists, and Frederick County agencies – set up along Carroll Creek Linear Park. In other parts of Frederick, business owners posted “Frederick Pride Ally” decals in their shop windows, indicating a safe space and a special discount for Pride attendees. From the ecumenical church service before the festival began, to the after-party at The Lodge in Boonsboro, Maryland, Frederick Pride went strong all day long.

The Frederick Center Elects

New Boardmembers The Frederick Center Board elected officers at the April board meeting. Kristopher Fair was elected as the new chair, Maureen Connors was re-elected vice chair, and Peter Brehm was re-elected treasurer. Adam DeBaugh remains secretary. New members Ruth Bushnell and Emily Perper have also joined the board.

Hagerstown Comes Out in Support of Community Free Clinic

On January 31st, 2016 the Gourmet Goat hosted the seventh annual Wine and Cheese “Silent & Lively” Auction at 28 South Restaurant to benefit the Community Free Clinic of Hagerstown, Maryland. The Community Free Clinic is a nonprofit organization with a small staff and receives no government funding. The clinic is open to all no matter one’s race, gender, orientation, or age. They are fully funded by donations, and every dollar donated provides eight dollars in medical services.
