Austin, Texas – The Texas legislature has been dominated by Republicans for a long time. The last time that a Democrat won statewide office was in 1994. The last Democratic presidential candidate to win the state was Jimmy Carter in 1976. Despite this recent history, there are small signs of change.
The newly formed Texas LGBT Caucus celebrated Trans Day of Advocacy at the Texas Capitol by welcoming trans youth as honorary pages. This is just one example of the importance that the caucus can play in fighting for LGBTQ rights despite its inability to pass legislation.
