Anti-Gay Hatefest at U of Texas, Austin

On November 21st 2019, a right-wing student activist tied to anti-gay Republican Texas politics launched an effort to fire a tenured, openly gay University of Texas, Austin, classics professor for his academic work on Ancient Greek and Roman sexuality. In short order, her campaign was hijacked by violent left-wing radicals, who attacked the professor at his house. There was a brick thrown his window, slanderous graffiti spray-painted on his Austin home’s facade, and a mob attack that forced him from his home under police escort. “Students for Safety” put out a call before Thanksgiving for Prof. Hubbard’s “immediate removal from […]

Groups demand Facebook remove false ads about PrEP

Seattle – Fifty organizations have called on Facebook and Instagram to remove ads that spread misinformation about the drug Truvada – one of the leading HIV meds and the drug usually prescribed for PrEP. The ads were placed by attorneys soliciting clients for a class-action lawsuit against Gilead pharmaceutical company, the manufacturer of Truvada. The ads suggest that PrEP users suffer harmful side effects from the medication, specifically bone density and kidney issues. While such side effects have been observed in a small number of PrEP users, Truvada is considered safe and effective by the Centers for Disease Control and […]

Dallas gay bar celebrates 40 years as community institution

Dallas – In 1979, Jim Roberts bought the Hidden Door bar, when it was still a straight bar frequented by airline employees coming over from Love Field. The bar already had been around at least a decade when Roberts bought it. The original owners, a couple of Braniff pilots, told Roberts the bar’s name came from a line in a Doris Day / Rock Hudson film in which Hudson tells Day he’s going to stop in at the Hidden Door, the bar in the hotel where they’re staying. When the bar was originally named, Hudson’s sexual orientation was hush-hush. By […]
