I know that there has been a lot of buzz about PrEP on social media, both positive and negative. As a PrEP counselor for the Visiting Nurse Association, I want to take this opportunity to state some basic facts, not opinions about the drug with you all. Let’s start with the basics.
On the weekend of March 31st through April 2nd, “No Fuckin’ Foolin’ Productions” hosted the second Annual Mid-Atlantic Drummer, Drummer Boy, and Drummer Bootblack contests at Paradise here in Asbury Park. I had the honor of being asked to be one of the judges for Mid-Atlantic Drummer and Mid-Atlantic Drummer Boy, alongside Simon Ruchti (whom I had the pleasure of stalking all weekend), Lisa Clark (Ms. New Jersey Leather 2011), and legendary disco icon, Felipe Rose, the Native American Indian of the Village People. This contest is a feeder contest for Drummer North America and welcomes any type of kink you’re into, jockstraps, pup play, cosplay, you name it. Not just leather or BDSM.
Summer will be here before you know it! Asbury Park will once again be bustling with visitors from all over the Northeast, gay and straight alike. There will be scantily clad men on the beach, the Paradise pool, and on the boardwalk. The Visiting Nurse Association will have its mobile testing unit everywhere around town providing free rapid HIV and syphilis tests. Thanks to the mobile unit and the Prevention Resource Network’s “Superhero” campaign, more and more gay men in town know their HIV status.
Hello readers. Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Rai Guerra-Nelson. I’ve been a resident of Asbury Park for almost 20 years. I moved here from Brooklyn, New York, when I bought my first home. Having been born and raised in a big city like Brooklyn, I thought I’d be here for a year, flip the house and go the hell back home. Boy was I in for a surprise! What I found in Asbury Park was a gorgeous beach, great restaurants, but also an incredible gay community unlike any I’ve ever known. A community that really comes together to protect and support their own when it is most needed. Whether it’s someone who needs a heart transplant, someone who has been recently diagnosed with cancer and just needs their “chosen” family to raise a little money to help out with day-to-day expenses, to just needing a ride home after a night at the bar with copious amounts of alcohol – they’re there!
