Resisting Temptation

For the most part, I live a pretty healthy lifestyle. I exercise 30 minutes four to five days a week and I eat more vegetables at breakfast than most people do all day. I don’t mind eating the same things every day. My breakfasts and lunches are standard and I add some variety at dinner. While I try to limit my sweets I am not very successful. I can plow through a box of Oreos and Reese’s are my kryptonite.

Elders Teach Us to Live in the Now

In addition to being a therapist and ICF-certified life coach, I also teach at Community College of Baltimore County. This teaching gig, more than others I’ve held at university level, is most special to me. You see I went from hating high school to excelling at CCBC. It is at CCBC where I learned the difference between simply “attending classes” and “becoming a student.” I went from obsessively watching the second hand on the clock tic by, to studying for hours and graduating with honors. So when given the offer to teach at CCBC, I jumped at the chance! Here was my opportunity to give back.

What is Gratitude?

Gratitude, thankfulness, gratefulness, or appreciation is a feeling or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive.

I’d like to acknowledge four different views of gratitude.

The Story of Two Monks

A senior monk and a junior monk were traveling together. At one point, they came to a river with a strong current. As the monks were preparing to cross the river, they saw a very young and beautiful woman also attempting to cross. In her struggle to cross the river, she asked the two monks if they would assist her.

The senior monk lifted the woman on to his shoulder and waded his way across the river. Once safely on the other side the the senior monk let her down and continued along the path. The junior monk was very upset, but said nothing.

Trick or Treat

An intense cold swept over them all. Harry felt his own breath catch in his chest. The cold went deeper than his skin. It was inside his chest, it was inside his very heart.

May Be

There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically. “May be,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed. “May be,” replied the old man.
