What you can do about the disastrous ‘American Health Care Act’

President Trump and the Republicans in control of the House and Senate longed vowed to kill Obamacare. On March 6th, they unveiled their proposed alternative– the “American Health Care Act” (AHCA)– which the Congressional Budget Office said less than a week later would throw 14 million Americans off the insurance rolls by next year. The number of Americans losing coverage would rise to 24 million by 2026, and premiums would rise all around.

New Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health research suggests that the implementation of state laws legalizing same-sex marriage was associated with a significant reduction in the rate of suicide attempts among high school students, and an even greater reduction among gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) adolescents.

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin released the following statement after the Republican-led Senate voted to use the Congressional Review Act to repeal the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) accountability regulations. The Department of Education’s rule provided states with additional local control of education while at the same time maintaining federal safeguards to ensure our most vulnerable students are not forgotten.

March 31st is International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV), an annual holiday dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and victories of transgender and gender non-conforming people and raising awareness of the discrimination they face worldwide. The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held in 2009. It has since been spearheaded by the U.S.-based youth advocacy organization Trans Student Educational Resources.

Los Angeles, CaliforniaMoonlight won Best Picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards, making it the first LGBT film to win the category. Due to the biggest mistake in Oscar’s history, presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were given the wrong envelope and inadvertently announced La La Land as the winner, and the remarks by the makers of Moonlight were stunted.
