The New Age of Consent

I admit that I’m now part of the older generation. You know that you have arrived there the first time you catch yourself uttering the phrase: “When I was your age….” I get it. Time brings change. Each generation puts their own stamp on the world and the leather community is no exception. One can embrace change or become that grumpy old man who still lives in the past. The last issue of Baltimore OUTloud carried an article from Dailyxtra.com entitled “Verbal Consent Needed at Sex Positive Spaces?” It spoke about a person being touched without consent and went on to state that young people are very conscious about consent and may interpret non-verbal actions as harassing behavior. Oddly enough I’d just been to a leather contest, and while waiting to go up onstage for the parade of club colors, a friend who I’ve known for years playfully groped me right before I was stepping on stage. When I got home that evening I got a text from him. It said, “Sorry if I crossed a line with touching your cock.” I jokingly replied, “You only crossed the line when you stopped!” It really made me think about how times have changed and how cruising may now be a lost art.

Join The Club

Times have changed. People don’t shop at malls, they shop online. People don’t meet in bars, they meet online. People work at home online and go to college online. Even during those rare times when people are out in public they are staring at their online devices. It makes me wonder. In the internet age are leather social clubs even relevant? As someone who has been the member of a leather club for over 20 years, my answer is a resounding: yes!

And Another Thing

A few weeks ago I told you about some of the leather events that are coming up in the next few months in our area. Since then I’ve heard about even more events that you’ll want to add to your schedule. So here’s another list of coming events.

There have always been protest at pride parades. In fact the first “pride parade” was a protest. We can usually count on one or more members of the religious right to hold up a sign that reads: “Homosexuality is a Sin!” Or “God Created Adam and Eve, Not Adam and Steve!” (Frankly for over 16 years I’ve been happy that he created Steve.) Pride parades have always been a celebration of diversity and acceptance. We celebrate all the colors of the rainbow.
