We Need to Talk

If you hear that statement, does it make you anxious? Do you get a knot in your stomach? Why? Why is talking a dreaded behavior? Or is it the unknown about what the talk might involve? Now if you hear that in a work context, is it different than when it is in a personal situation?

Elders in need of a financial makeover will find some change at the LGBT Health Resource Center’s next “Lunch & Learn” workshop. Karen Sadler of PNC Bank will present money management strategies on Thursday, August 10th from noon to 1:30 pm in the community rooms at Chase Brexton’s Mount Vernon Center (1111 North Charles Street, Baltimore). We asked Franklin McNeil, Jr., vice president and community consultant with PNC and a former Chase Brexton board member for a few financial tips.

LGBT seniors will have a chance to dish on important nutrition tips at the LGBT Health Resource Center’s upcoming “Lunch & Learn” workshop. Chase Brexton Health Care nutritionist Tiana Matthews-Martinez will present “The Art of Nutrition: Are You Eating Your Rainbow?” on Thursday, July 13th from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the community rooms at Chase Brexton’s Mount Vernon Center (1111 North Charles Street, Baltimore).

Individuals who have suffered incidents of intimate partner violence can connect with other survivors in a safe, supportive environment thanks to a new support group offered by The LGBT Health Resource Center.

Mosquito Season

Dear Dr. Eva,

The mosquito season is already exploding in my back yard. After a couple of hours of gardening, my wrists and ankles have so many bites they are swollen. I put on mosquito repellent, but is there anything else I can do? I’m thinking of hiring a mosquito spraying service, but I wonder if the spray is dangerous and also won’t it interfere with the ecosystem?

Fill Your Cup

We’ve all heard the saying, “You can’t give from an empty cup.” And to be honest, it used to drive me crazy. I never understood the concept of taking care of yourself, so that you can give your best effort in everything you do. Unfortunately, for most of the population, this concept is non-existent. Most of us juggle many responsibilities and aren’t taking care of ourselves – physically, mentally, or emotionally. Having experienced total depletion on all three of these, I want to give you my top-five tips for making sure I’m taking care of my needs every day. I didn’t understand the importance of these until I could no longer be of service to my family, job, and especially to myself.
