Leather Line, Mid-Atlantic Mondays

Friday, July 21, 2017

On Thursday, July 13th Megan (DeJarlais) Martin, International Ms Leather 1998 and Ms. Baltimore Eagle 1993, donated her IMsL title vest to the Carter Johnson Leather Library and Collection (Mid-Atlantic Annex) for long-term loan to the Baltimore Eagle’s trophy case. More than 60 leatherfolk from FIST, COMMAND, Mid-Atlantic girls of Leather, Onyx, and many other local groups “showed up and showed out” to welcome her back to Baltimore and celebrate all of the contributions she has made to our community through the years. Two of Megan’s IMsL sisters, Jessi Ahart (IMsL 2005 / Ms Baltimore Eagle 2005) and Lascivious Jane (IMsL 2016) – were also in attendance, along with her Ms. Baltimore Eagle predecessor, Glenda Rider– Ms. Baltimore Eagle 1992.

There have always been protest at pride parades. In fact the first “pride parade” was a protest. We can usually count on one or more members of the religious right to hold up a sign that reads: “Homosexuality is a Sin!” Or “God Created Adam and Eve, Not Adam and Steve!” (Frankly for over 16 years I’ve been happy that he created Steve.) Pride parades have always been a celebration of diversity and acceptance. We celebrate all the colors of the rainbow.

I met Jewel Vanderlee of Bloomfield, New Jersey, not long ago and it quickly became evident she’s a force to be reckoned with. She helped inject new life into the International Ms. Leather / International Ms. Bootblack Weekend as she headed the social media department. The excitement for the event was at a fever pitch this year and the environment she helped to create online deserves a great deal of credit for that. On the East Coast front, she throws play parties, works for Lambda Legal, and is unapologetically fierce, femme, and proud, and will unflinchingly use her voice when she feels strongly about an issue.
